Roofing Services in Nanty Glo

  • Roof leak repair. Tracing water back to where it is actually getting in, which is rarely directly above the stain on the ceiling.
  • Residential roofing. Repairs, shingle work, valley and flashing work, and metal roof installation on homes.
  • Metal roof repair and coating. Fasteners, seams and flashing, which is where metal roofs give up long before the panels do.
  • Roof restoration. Coating a sound roof instead of tearing it off, where the deck and insulation allow it.
  • Roof maintenance. Scheduled inspections, clearing drainage and catching small repairs, with the written records a warranty needs.
  • Free roof inspections. On any building type.

Why Roofs Age Faster in the Blacklick Valley

Nanty Glo sits in a narrow valley on Blacklick Creek with wooded slopes rising on both sides. That setting changes how a roof weathers, and not in your favor.

Cold air settles here. In a tight valley, cold air pools overnight and stays put. Frost sits on roof surfaces in the borough longer into the morning than it does on open ground a few miles away. A roof that stays frozen until mid-morning in February is a roof spending more of the winter crossing the freezing point rather than sitting safely below it.

Crossing that line is what does the damage. Water finds a hairline opening at a seam, a fastener or a flashing lap. It freezes, expands, and makes the opening slightly wider. Then it thaws and repeats. One winter of that turns a gap you could not see in October into one that drips in March.

It is why so many of the roofs we are called to in spring had a small, known problem the previous fall.

Poor drainage and standing water on a roof in Nanty Glo, Cambria County PA

Tree Cover Is the Local Roofing Problem

Most towns do not have this to the degree Nanty Glo does. The wooded slopes around the borough put a lot of roofs into partial shade and a lot of gutters underneath overhanging limbs. Three things follow from that.

Shaded slopes stay wet. A north-facing slope under tree cover dries slowly after rain and very slowly after snowmelt. Persistent moisture is what grows the dark streaking and the moss you see on older roofs around here. Moss is not only a cosmetic problem. It holds water against the surface, and as it thickens it lifts the edges of shingles from underneath.

Debris dams water. Leaves and needles gather in valleys, behind chimneys and in gutters. Water that cannot run off backs up instead, and backed-up water gets into laps and seams that were never built to sit underwater. This is the single most common cause of a leak we find on a roof that is otherwise in decent shape.

Limbs wear a roof down. A branch resting on a roof abrades the surface every time the wind moves it, and it does that quietly for years.

None of this is expensive to deal with if it actually gets dealt with. Clearing valleys and gutters twice a year and cutting back the limbs that touch the roof costs very little next to replacing a slope that has been holding moisture for a decade.

Commercial and Agricultural Roofing Near Nanty Glo

Move out of the borough and the buildings change quickly: farm buildings, workshops, pole barns, garages and small industrial units, and most of them are metal.

Metal roofs on buildings like that almost never fail in the panels. What fails is the fasteners, whose rubber washers harden and shrink through years of heat and cold until they no longer seal, together with the seams and the flashing details. A metal roof leaking in four or five places is usually a roof with worn-out fasteners rather than a worn-out roof, and that is a repair and coating job rather than a replacement.

Areas We Serve Around Nanty Glo

We cover the Blacklick Valley and the surrounding townships, including Vintondale, Twin Rocks, Belsano, Colver, Revloc, Mundys Corner, Strongstown, Ebensburg and Blacklick. Nanty Glo sits between our base in Indiana County and Johnstown, so we are through this area regularly on the way to jobs in both directions and across Cambria County.

Free Roof Inspections in Nanty Glo

We provide free roof inspections on homes, commercial buildings, farm buildings and industrial units throughout Nanty Glo and the Blacklick Valley.

An inspection tells you what condition the roof is genuinely in, where water is getting in if it is leaking, and whether the roof can be repaired or coated rather than replaced. You get a written report with photographs and a price based on what we actually found up there.

If nobody has looked at your roof in more than a year, or there has been a storm since the last time, that is the point to book one.

Lester's Carpentry put metal roofing on 2 homes for us. They completed job in the time frame as promised. Each worker was knowledgable of his assigned job and did very good cleanup after finishing the work. Quality materials seem to be used and price was very reasonable. We have already recommended this company to others and would highly recommend it again.

Highly recommend using Lester's Carpentry! They put a new metal roof on my home and i am very pleased with their work. Pricing is nearly impossible to beat and the quality of their work is top notch. From estimate to completion of the new roof, everything went flawlessly. Debbie in the office that coordinated the estimate and scheduled the install was FANTASTIC! I truly wish there was a Debbie in the customer service department of every business.. The workers were all very professional and courteous, and answered any questions i had. We had extensive work done to our house this spring. One of the best decisions that we made was to have Lester’s Carpentry come out and install a metal roof on our house. The crew of guys that were sent out were very nice, neat, respectful and professional. They had our whole house finished in about 4.25 hours. When they left, they were gone like they were never there, except that we had this amazing roof on our house!
I have to say, too, that Debbie, from their office, couldn’t have been nicer and more helpful to work with, also.
We highly recommend Lester’s Carpentry. I wouldn’t call anyone else.

Nanty Glo Roofing FAQs

What are the black streaks and green patches on my roof?

The black streaking is usually algae, and the green is moss. Both need one thing to take hold, which is a surface that stays damp, so they turn up first on shaded north-facing slopes and under tree cover. Algae is mostly cosmetic. Moss is not, because it holds water against the roof and lifts shingle edges as it thickens. Either way it is telling you that part of the roof is not drying out, which is worth looking at before it becomes a leak.

Is Nanty Glo inside your normal service area?

Yes. We are based in Rossiter in Indiana County, which is a short run from the Blacklick Valley, and we work across Cambria County constantly. Nanty Glo is one of the closer towns to us rather than one of the furthest.

My roof is shaded and mossy. Can it still be coated?

Usually, provided the deck and structure underneath are sound and the insulation is dry. Moss and biological growth have to be cleaned off and the surface properly prepared first, and a coating applied over a dirty or damp surface will not bond. Where a Conklin restoration system is suitable, it carries a 20-year non-prorated manufacturer warranty, with the option to renew for a further 20 years, subject to the system installed and its renewal requirements. Lester’s Roofing & Carpentry also provides its own 3-year contractor workmanship warranty.

How often should gutters and valleys be cleared here?

Twice a year on a roof under trees, once in late fall after the leaves have finished dropping and once in spring. Roofs with conifers nearby need it more often, because needles drop year round and pack down more tightly than leaves do. Blocked drainage is a common reason roofs leak during a thaw rather than during the snowfall itself.
