Why Windber Roofs Work Harder Than Most
Two things make roofs in this area age faster than the Pennsylvania average.
Snow. Northern Somerset County sits on the western edge of the Laurel Highlands, and this corner of the state catches noticeably more snow than the lowlands west of it. That means real accumulated load on low-slope roofs, and it means ice forming at eaves and valleys when a warm roof melts snow that refreezes at the colder edge.
Freeze and thaw. Winter here crosses the freezing point repeatedly rather than staying cold. Water works into a small opening at a seam or a fastener, freezes, expands and widens it, then repeats. An opening that was sound in October can be leaking by March.
The practical consequence is that fall is the right time to deal with a known problem in Windber. A small repair before winter is a very different job from the same repair after a season of freeze and thaw has worked on it.
Older Housing Stock, Older Roofs
Windber was built as a coal company town, and a great deal of the housing here dates from that era. That matters for roofing in a specific way: these are older homes on tight lots, often with steep pitches, original framing and several layers of covering added over the decades.
On a house like that, the things worth checking are rarely the field of the roof. They are the valleys, the flashing where additions meet the original structure, the chimney flashing, and how many layers are already up there. A roof carrying three layers of shingle is both a load problem and a repair problem, because there is nothing left to fasten to.
We will tell you plainly whether a roof needs a repair, a tear-off or a coating, and we will tell you when a repair is not worth doing.
Commercial and Agricultural Roofing Near Windber
Outside the borough the building mix changes quickly to farm buildings, workshops, pole barns and light industrial units, most of them metal.
Metal roofs on those buildings almost never fail in the panels. What fails is the fasteners, whose rubber washers harden and shrink through years of heat and cold, along with the seams and flashing details. A metal roof leaking in several places is usually a roof with worn-out fasteners rather than a worn-out roof, which means it can often be repaired and coated instead of replaced.
More detail is on our metal roof repair and metal roof coatings pages.

Free Roof Inspections in Windber
We provide free roof inspections on homes, commercial buildings, farm buildings and industrial units throughout Windber and northern Somerset County.
An inspection tells you what condition the roof is actually in, where water is getting in if it is leaking, and whether the roof can be repaired or coated rather than replaced. You get a written report with photographs and a price based on what we found.
If it has been more than a year since anyone looked at your roof, or there has been a storm since, that is the point to book one.

Windber Roofing FAQs
Do you work on homes as well as commercial buildings?
Yes. Most of our work is commercial, industrial and agricultural, but we handle residential roofing too, including repairs, shingle work and metal roof installation.
My roof only leaks in heavy rain. Is that urgent?
It is worth looking at before winter. A leak that only appears in heavy rain is usually a small opening that heavy water volume finds. Freeze and thaw will make that opening larger over a season, and what is a minor repair in October is often a bigger one by spring.
Can my roof be coated instead of replaced?
Often, where the deck and structure are sound and the insulation is dry. Where a Conklin restoration system is suitable, it carries a 20-year non-prorated manufacturer warranty, with the option to renew for a further 20 years, subject to the system installed and its renewal requirements. Lester’s Roofing & Carpentry also provides its own 3-year contractor workmanship warranty.
How do I get my roof ready for snow season?
Clear the gutters and drains, deal with known small repairs before the cold arrives, and have the roof inspected in fall. Snow and ice expose weak seams, flashing and drainage, and those usually show up as leaks during or after a thaw rather than during the snowfall itself.
